We are always on the lookout for new and innovative fitness brands. We recently had a chance to talk with the founder of a new company, Netix Fitness, Mike. The magnetic gym bag he created keeps your bag and gear up off the ground and out of the way.

Fitness Gear For Guys: How did you come up with the idea for the Netix gym bags?

Mike, Founder of Netix Fitness: I actually came up with Netix after a loaded barbell landed directly on my gym bag! After finishing a set of hang cleans, I dropped the barbell and the bumper plate hit an ident in the platform and landed right on top of my gym bag.

I never liked leaving my bag on the gym floor anyway – it was always wet and dirty and I figured there was tons of bacteria. After crushing my bag, though, I knew there had to be a better way. That was my “a-ha” moment. I left to gym and got working on what would become Netix.

FG2: Where did the name Netix come from?

Mike: It’s actually funny – the name was the hardest part! We wanted the name to speak to the bag’s magnetic feature. After months of trying to incorporate “magnetics” we started focusing on how to add “-netics.” Then, one day, “Netix” came up and the brand really came to life.

FG2: What is the process like developing, testing, and perfecting these gym bags?

It took about 8 months of development and testing to get Netix to where it is today. Much of the testing was around the magnetic features – the type of magnet, strength, and magnet placements the bag needed. We knew exactly what materials we wanted to use –the biggest concern was making sure the magnetic feature was as effective and efficient as possible.

From a testing perspective, we started at “ground level,” for sure. Initial tests were done with a mesh a grocery bag and a few magnets – that helped prove the concept. Within a few months we were testing different prototypes and tweaking the design for max holding capacity and ease of use. There’s no question that it was a great experience and it really was incredible to watch Netix evolve.

FG2: Can you give us any more details on the material the bags are made from?

We were also incredibly focused on the materials we used – we wanted the highest possible quality. We landed on 500D Cordura, which is known for its tear strength, abrasion resistance and overall durability. We added in YKK zippers – the #1 zippers in the industry. They’re also extremely dependable there’s no need to fear having to deal with faulty zippers.

Then, of course, you’ve got the magnets. Netix uses neodymium magnets – they’re the strongest magnets commercially available. Neodymium magnets are part of the rare earth magnet family which are known for their strength and their long lasting magnetism. The strength of these magnets are amazing and what makes Netix stand out from other gym bags in the market.

FG2: What’s your go to gear that you keep in your Netix bag when you hit the gym?

I always carry my jump rope, bands, chalk, straps and of course, my headphones and cellphone for my music. To tell you the truth, I also like to bring a book for those long steady state cardio sessions following my workout. There’s no better time to get your reading in!

FG2: What’s next for Netix?

That’s a great question! We have seen a ton of success with Netix – right now we’re in select CrossFit and Gold’s Gym locations. We’ve also launched an affiliate program, and that’s helped us bring a lot of really passionate fans into the mix even more.

We’re also really focused on listening to our customers to get their feedback on what features they’d like to see going forward. Only time will tell what direction we go, but there’s no question that we are extremely pleased with our launch this year and look forward to continue to bring our fans gear they love.
